UK City League 2020 Success
After sadly cancelling all of their highly anticipated international events in 2020, the Battle Cancer team were still determined to raise as much money as possible for cancer charities in the UK through the City League Series.
The Battle Cancer team made it to 17 gyms in total across the UK with the City League Challenge before England went into lockdown and all gyms were closed. An impressive 350 teams signed up and completed the challenge virtually, 15 host gyms delivered their own fundraising events and there were over 40 fitness class takeovers by the Battle Cancer team. All with one goal in mind- To inspire, support and unite people who want to kick cancer into the dust and raise as much money as possible through fitness.
The City League challenge consisted of 3 workouts in total completed by teams of 4. Workout 1 was an AMRAP: As Much Raised As Possible. Fundraising for their cancer charity of choice, the more raised, the higher their score. £1 = 1 rep. Workout 2 and 3 were two 9-minute Battle Cancer style workouts back to back. Each workout was designed to ensure social distancing at all times, and all equipment was cleaned thoroughly between each workout.
Kicking off the tour in London saw the team visit 6 gyms in the first week, raising an incredible £8,000. An amazing effort for the first week and a great motivator to keep the challenge going and get to as many gyms as possible over the next few weeks. The team then ventured across the Scottish border and beyond, with fundraising well underway and the total amount raised growing daily. With new Covid-19 restrictions announced on a regular basis, the team had to make a few last-minute route changes and unfortunately were unable to make it to Northern Ireland to bring the City League to BLK BOX. Our team were really looking forward to the challenge but at least now we have time to get even fitter and stronger to give it our best at City League 2021!
The Battle Cancer team then travelled on to East and South England, finishing the 3 week tour in the Battle Cancer home gym, Move Forward, their brand-new gym in East Devon, fully kitted out with BLK BOX equipment. New members, coaches and even kids’ teams all got involved and gave it their all, finishing the tour with a bang.
Covid-19 may have put a halt to their original plans, but that didn’t stop the movement raising over £9,000 for the Move Forward Program, and an estimated additional £30,000 for multiple cancer charities.
Some of the teams were unable to get their scores in before lockdown tier 3 measures were introduced in England and NI so the prize winners are yet to be determined. Once lockdown has lifted and it’s safe to travel, the winner will be announced and will come to BLK BOX HQ for a money can’t buy experience. The winning team will get to train in our showroom gym, have a full tour of HQ and design, engineer and fabricate their own personalised piece of kit to take home with them.
Here’s to Battle Cancer City League 2021 where hopefully even more will be raised for cancer charities!
